I was very pleased to have found the Aqueduct of Pegões which wasn’t that far from the Convento de Cristo. One could say that this would actually be part of the Convento de Cristo since this is the aqueduct which supplies water to the convent. Aqueducts are always the engineering marvel and they are a sight to behold. There massive structures are used to ferry water from far away places using only the power of gravity. This just means that water would be coming from a higher place and it just flows downwards to the destination. This means that the height of the source and the destination would have to be measured accurately to be able to build something which has a very gentle incline for the water to flow down.
While I wanted to try to walk on top of the aqueduct itself, I decided against it since there weren’t any safety rails to prevent any falls. I drove further down the road to see if I can get up close to the taller parts of the aqueduct. There was only a small place to park the car since a road was built beside the aqueduct. Fortunately, there wasn’t a lot of traffic passing through so I managed to safely take my photos. At this point, the aqueduct is now a two layer archway around 30 meters tall. I doesn’t seem to be possible to climb it from here apart from starting at the end. It is quite impressive to see how tall it is. Unfortunately, I was too close to it and there didn’t seem to be a place to admire this section of the aqueduct from afar.
