It was already midafternoon and I think I really need to head to Galway where I will be spending the night. I was still in the remote reaches of county Mayo trying to follow the Wild Atlantic Way. There have been a lot of surprises along the way and despite the weather I was quite happy with what I saw. I finally started to head towards the direction of Galway, it is still a good distance away and it would be probably evening by the time I get there. However, the explorer in me couldn’t resist following some road which leads to the water.
Looking at the map, there is a piece of land which sticks out into the water. Having seen a lot of these types of places in Ireland, I think these would be something special. I ended up at Stonefield Bay Beach. It actually wasn’t as nice as I though it would be. There is small bay with a beach. There is some land behind the beach and very modest cliffs. I think it would be much more impressive had the mountains been taller here. If you keep driving, eventually there is small fishing port. It didn’t seem to be busy. Despite not being the jaw dropping scenery I hoped it was. I was still glad that I found this place. I just goes to show you how plentiful places like these are in Ireland.
