I ended up visiting the Céide Fields Visitor Center last because a guided tour was starting just as soon as I arrived. Now that the tour is over, I have time to explore the visitor center. The center wasn’t that large. It is housed within a pyramid shaped building and it was several exhibits in it. There were exhibits about the ice age which helped shape the environment. There was also one dedicated to bogs which are quite common in Ireland. Naturally, there was the main topic about the field systems. I think this is one of the better exhibits I have seen.
The exhibits show how the people of those times lived. The exhibits come with extremely lifelike figures which startled me when I first saw it. Especially the one with the old lady in some sort of bed. There was very detailed information about the lives of the people of Neolithic Ireland. They even have a skeleton of a house which shows so technologically savvy these people were thousands of years ago. Unfortunately, a lot of the materials they used back have long since decomposed. There are some more durable materials like stone which form houses and surround the fields we can see here in the Céide Fields. Perhaps the centerpiece of the visitor center is a centuries old tree which was unearthed from the bog. The tree was wonderfully preserved because bog has little to no oxygen which helps decompose organic matter. The three has long since died but the trunk was preserved by the bog.
