The Céide Fields Visitor Center is the first place visitors see when visiting Céide Fields. It is a pyramid shaped building which serves as the gateway to the Céide Fields. When I visited the place, I was told that there is a guided tour starting shortly. As a result, I wasn’t able to see the visitor center until after the tour. Our tour, while interesting, was cut short because everybody just wanted to go back in the visitor center because of the weather. It was a pity since the guide was very knowledgeable about the area.
Inside the Céide Fields Visitor Center was much more comfortable. This place educates visitors on the significance of the place. The field systems were discovered below the bog which makes it older than the bog. The bog also has a wonderful ability to preserve stuff which unfortunately happens to fall into it. The rest was left for future archeologists to discover. It was interesting to know how the field systems were mapped without excavation and without the use of modern technology. Someone would poke an iron rod into the ground, if there was something hard, then it is most probably a wall. This was done all over the site and it gave archeologists an idea of how large this area was.
