I might have picked a terrible time to go driving. I traveled all the way to county Mayo following the Wild Atlantic Way to see the beautiful coastal scenery of Ireland. This is my first time in this area and I think I managed to find the right place. Unfortunately, the weather is really bad that day but nothing much I can do about that. Downpatrick Head is one of the signature sights here in the Wild Atlantic Way. There is a parking area where you can have a look at the headland. However, it is a bit too far away, I moved the car closer and sure enough there was another parking area closer to the entrance
The wind was blowing and the rain was pouring that I didn’t really feel like taking photos here. There is a gate to let yourself in. Surprisingly, there were people here also on tour and I just followed them in. One of the interesting spots of Downpatrick Head is this nearly rectangular natural blowhole. Parts of the land have collapsed here and left an almost perfect hole. You can actually see the water slamming against the rocks below. This gives you an idea of how powerful the force of nature is. I have heard of diving competitions being held at blowholes like this but I don’t think it is possible to do that here with the jagged rocks below.
