Sacred Sites at Malin Well

Cave at Malin Well

Cave at Malin Well

Malin Well was a curious little detour as I was trying to make my way through the Inishowen 100 driving route. I merely followed the signs to the well and it was easy enough for find. I was imagining Malin Well to be more like a water well where you can get water from, but this well is more appropriately called a spring. This was considered a holy site back then and the Christian missionaries decided to capitalize on that. A church was constructed near the well. While the church is no longer in working order, there are still a few features here which are worth noting.

There is a shrine for the Blessed Virgin Mary on one side of the hill. The statue is enclosed in glass and it seems to be a new addition to the site. There is a mass held here at Malin Well on August 15 which is the Feast of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary. Further along the hill, there is a curious hole here which is described to be a cave. The cave actually looks more like a bite out of the hill. It is said that a holy man once lived here and he would receive visitors. The cave is supposedly miraculous that no matter how many people come to the cave, there still seems to be room left.
