Walking Along the Beach at Five Fingers Strand

Walking Along the Beach at Five Fingers Strand

Five Fingers Strand is probably one of the more interesting spots here along the Inishowen 100 driving route. I like how these places are properly sign posted, so one would just have to follow the signs to follow the route. I have ended up at the Five Fingers Strand and I walked from the carpark to the beach. What I realized, walking towards the beach, was that this entire place is made entirely of sand. It was like one massive sand dune. The sand further inland is already tightly packed but this was not the case closer to the water.

The path to the beach got progressively worse with the sand collapsing in a lot of parts. Some areas, visitors would have to scramble up and down the sand to continue. While there have been attempts to create a concrete path from the carpark to the beach, this doesn’t seem to have worked ad the sand underneath the concrete collapsed and ruining the concrete path. Once visitors get to the beach itself, they will be rewarded with stunning views of the sea and of the sand dunes which are by the beach. Those are not hills but sand dunes which have grass growing on them. Perhaps those are one of the more stable parts if plants can grow there. Closer to the beach, the sand also collapses revealing its sandy insides.
