Fort Dunree is a military fortress that was built near a strategic bend of the Lough Swilly. This was to ensure that this waterway is protected. Officially, Ireland is neutral, so back in the second world war, Ireland was keeping an eye out on the British, not that there were the enemy, but rather, they needed to keep the British away in case they decide to seek shelter in Irish territory. By hiding in Irish Territory, it might undermine their neutral stance. There once came a time where the British strayed too near and they were repeatedly warned to stay away, lest they be fired upon. The British moved away in the end.
The fort itself is an impressive structure. It sits on top of the protrusion into the Lough Swilly, which gives it an unparalleled view of the area. The fort is also elevated and surrounded by steep cliffs, which makes it difficult to invade by sea. The only way one can access Fort Dunree would be to go by land which is surely protected as well. There is a concrete pier which sticks out into the lough. This happens to be give visitors an excellent view of Fort Dunree.
