Inside Castle Caldwell

Castle Caldwell

Castle Caldwell

I walked past the Castle Caldwell, not realizing that it was already the place I was looking for. The plant growth in this castle ruin was so thick as to obscure the original structure. This is probably the most difficult castle to visit in this trip if only for the overgrown plants. As a result, it wasn’t easy to figure out the parts of the castle. Most easily recognizable are the windows. There would be places where one would have to almost crawl to get through the next area. It was almost like an obstacle course. There were parts of the castle where roots would have grown so much that it reminded me of some temples I visited in Cambodia which I have talked about in this blog years ago.

This is a different kind of ruins since it is a castle as opposed to a temple. Some areas of the castle were still recognizable as rooms since there was an clearing. There were places where you can still see the fireplace but it is certainly unusable at this stage. Castle Caldwell is the last of the plantation castles which I have visited. I got an idea of what castles are now and they aren’t necessarily the fairy tale type of castles which one may find in children’s books. This was a dwelling place which was occupied by people not too long ago. I’m sure there are other castles in the area but I was surprised to know how many there were actually here.
