I came to county Fermanagh to see if I can get some nice photos of the lake land in the county. What I didn’t know was that there are several castle ruins all within driving distance of each other. I decided that I should try to visit all of these castle since I was already here. The next one of the list of Monea Castle. It seems that this area of Ireland, known as Ulster, is not that easy to take control of. English then decided to move people from England to this part of Ireland. I guess the promise of owning land was enough reason for people to move from a comfortable life in England to Ulster.
The Plantation of Ulster of the major project undertaken by the English to take over Ireland. The native Irish were naturally hostile to these invaders and the transplanted people would have to build defensive dwellings to fend off the locals. Thus these plantation castles were born. Monea castle is just one of several in the area. It seems that Monea castle is in a better state of repair compared to the others. There is a gate which keeps animals away but entrance is free. Already I think this castle is in much better shape compared to the previous one which I have visited.
