I was surprised to know that there was another castle not too far away from Enniskillen Castle. I merely followed the signs to the castle and there it was. It wasn’t that impressive though. Most of the walls and roof is already gone. What is left are the foundations of the original castle. There was a sign here which describes how it was back then, including the most probable layout of the castle. What it told me what that it was actually near a narrow point of the river. This made the castle a good spot for defense. If an enemy would be coming up from the river, they would surely pass by Portora Castle.
Sure enough as one enters the grounds of the ruins of Portora Castle, visitors will surely notice the river which runs right behind the castle. It is surprisingly quite high, presumably also for defense purposes. Notice that there was also a walking/jogging path which runs alongside the river and bloew the castle. How often do you get to jog past a centuries old castle? I thought that was a very unique location. I didn’t bother going down anymore since there didn’t seem to be anything else interesting down there.
