I didn’t realize that I have been weaving in and out of the old city walls for a while now. The city walls were torn town in an urban renewal program part of which resulted in the Place de la Bourse. Port Cailhau served as the original gate into the city and it is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. The gate has multiple conical towers which are reminiscent of fairy tale castles. I think it is funny that I have only seen a handful of castles with pointed towers like these. The gate is said to be built as a triumphal gate because of their success against Rome.
Although I did see people taking photos of the Porte Cailhau, I didn’t seem people going in. It is said to have a small museum which shows how the tower was built but I didn’t see people going in. It don’t think the view would have been that amazing since it wasn’t that tall. I would probably like a view of Bordeaux which gives me a view of most of the roofs of the buildings here. The rear of the tower looks quite similar to the front. It would probably have been nice to have a lot of buildings with this type of architectures but I don’t think it would have been very practical.
