It is funny how certain features can follow you when you go somewhere else. This is what I found out when I found out that the River Garonne exits to the Atlantic here in the city of Bordeaux. I first ran into the River Garonne when I was in the city of Toulouse. It was the major river on whose shores the city was built. It winds its way all the way to Bordeaux where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. This is quite a long river and it is not a surprise then that they decided to build a system of canals which can connect the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. This would shorten travel time as well as raise the importance of Bordeaux as a shortcut to the Mediterranean.
Indeed, the city of Bordeaux is a major port city. Such is its importance that the city nicknamed Port of the Moon or Le Port de la Lune. I was wondering about what is up with that romantic name. I looked at the mape and saw the Bordeaux was built along a bend of the River Garonne, which some can say is in the a shape of the crescent moon. For a while, Bordeaux was just a port city and much of city wasn’t very pleasant. However, recent renovations and revival have brightened up the city and it is one of the most photographed cities in the country.
