I was disappointed to know that Bordeaux Cathedral was closed at the time of my visit. I wasn’t sure if it was closed for renovation or they just don’t open at that time. It was just after lunch, maybe they close the cathedral for that. It was disappointing but there is nothing I can do about it. The plaza around the cathedral is actually a nice place to walk around. The cathedral itself is in the middle of the place and visitors can walk all around the church. I discovered that the cathedral also has a separate bell tower.
The bell tower of the cathedral was just as nice as the rest of the church. I don’t get the need to built the bell tower separately since they are still part of the same church. From what I read, it seems that having a separate bell tower allows the use of larger bells. The constant ringing of bells in an attached tower could vibrate the rest of the church thereby compromising the integrity of the structure. I guess the need for the bells to be heard was greater than the need for the tower to be close to the church itself.
