I arrived in the beautiful city of Bordeaux much later than I thought I would. By the time I checked in to the Hotel de France in Bordeaux, it was already lunch time. I guess you can blame me for not finding the hotel sooner. I was a bit late in my itinerary but I have to settle things with my stomach first. I was hoping that there would be some place nearby which would be nice for me to try. I was hoping to avoid having a sandwich for lunch since it was my last day in France and I would want to have something nice.
Not too far away from the hotel was a restaurant which seemed to specialize in steaks. I admit, I haven’t been enamored with the steaks I had here in the country but the guy outside the restaurant seemed to be very convincing about the quality of the food. The restaurant’s name – Hippopotamus, probably tells you it isn’t very French but no matter. I got a hold of what is supposedly their specialty, Fillet of Cheateaubriand Beef. I have never heard of this kind of beef before, apparently, it is from the thickest part of the sirloin. If they say it is good then I hope it is. Long story short, it wasn’t that good. The meat itself wasn’t very tender and it was dry and almost overcooked. I wasn’t sure if it was because the way I ordered it. Perhaps I would attribute this to being spoiled by very good Irish beef steaks. In hindsight, I probably should have seen the signs. The fact that they have a dedicated English menu probably speaks volumes of their target market. The staff however, made up for the lackluster steak I had. They were extremely friendly and would always drop by to ask how I was.
