The sun have finally gone down here in Carcassonne. It might be a little misleading it is actually still late afternoon. It is winter here and the sun goes down much earlier. I always thought that it was a bad idea to go on vacation during winter since the days are much shorter. I didn’t really feel that I was short on time because the sun goes down earlier. It is possible that it was because I would use sunset as a signal for me to stop and prepare for dinner. In this case, I would have to start heading back to the hotel. I was still in Carcassonne and I would still have to travel to get back to Toulouse, however I would be missing probably one of the best parts of visiting this citadel.
The Cité de Carcassonne is lit up at night and it can be seen all across the town. It helps that the citadel is built on a hill for everyone can easily see it. The lights were tastefully designed to give that imposing feel at the same time it would also appear like a magical jewel on top of the hill. It really was a jewel for many centuries since this seemed to be a prized location. With the rise of tourism, it has become its main industry. This put even more importance on preserving the citadel.
