One of the main characteristics of Carcassonne is its walls. The walls are actually in plural because it has two walls which surround the town. I have seen this kind of setup and I think it makes sense to put two layers of defensive walls to slow the enemy down. The walls have in turn made the town even larger. However, walking in the town would reveal that there is a living breathing town with the walls. One would have to keep walking to be able to see the actual citadel which is being defended.
The main citadel is not that large after all. I could only look at it from the outside since it was closed but the walls are high and give the citadel the appearance of a castle. There are several towers which have pointed roofs giving it the appears of a Disney like castle. There is a bridge which gives access to the main citadel. I would imagine that there used to be a moat which surrounds the main citadel as yet another defensive wall. However, the water here is long gone. Instead officials have put seats here for people to rest at. Seeing the the main citadel makes me feel sorry that I wasn’t able to see what is inside. However, I should count my blessings since I was able to explore much of the citadel without paying a single cent.
