The citadel of Carcassonne is certainly a very impressive place. The town within the walls is actually very lively, arguably much livelier that the town outside the walls. This is where all the tourists come after all. As I was exploring the town within the walls, I came across what appears to be the central fortress. This seems to be one of the most important areas of the citadel. I noticed that there weren’t a lot of people here. I realized that this was one of the parts of the citadel which is accessible only by ticket. Alas, it was New Year’s Day, and no one would be working that day.
I could only look through the holes and try to figure out what was in it. There seemed to be another open area within and there also were what appear to be targets. I imagine that there would be performances here where there would be archers who would prove their skills. I won’t have any chance to see that, so I just had to explore some other place. For me, the most interesting part of the citadel were the walls themselves. They go all the way around the citadel and it makes for a nice walk. I took a lot of photos of the walls since they are probably the only spots which I can access at this point.
