As a crossed the Pont Vieux on my way to the citadel of Carcassonne, I noticed that the citadel is actually still some distance away. I was under the impression that the bridge would actually lead directly to the citadel but it seems there is still a little bit of town left to pass through before reaching it. It seems that it is much more lively here, probably people can’t resist to open their shops even if it was New Year’s Day. There were substantially more tourists here compared to the main town. This made me somewhat relieved since it seems that Carcassonne is really a place worth visiting.
The town area has a much livelier street scene. There were restaurants lining the streets even if not all of them were open. There were also hotels and inns here. I think it would be nice to be so near the citadel but if I would be staying in this area, I would want to stay in the citadel itself. I wasn’t sure if there are places to stay there but judging from the number of hotels which are in the area, there is a very good chance that there are places to stay there.
