The town of Carcassonne wasn’t that interesting. It could be due to the fact that it was New Year’s Day that the place wasn’t lively but it seemed rather boring. In a way, it is nice like this since you won’t have the place overrun by tourists like me, it is after all, one of France’s most visited places. I made a beeline for the citadel which on the outskirts of town. Soon enough I came across the river Aude. This is one of the natural boundaries of the town of Carcassonne and the beginning of the area where the citadel is.
The river Aude wasn’t especially wide but it was good enough to serve as a barrier for invaders. There is a nice bridge which traverses the river. The bridge, Pont Vieux, is a multiarched bridge. The bridge has a viewing area where visitors can admire the bridge. I was attracted to the river Aude which seemed to be a nice place to have a picnic at. There were ducks on the river and they were very lively. The bridge appears to be very well maintained and it probably should since this is one of the most visited places in France.
