Buildings in the Town of Carcassonne
As I was reading about the UNESCO World Heritage site of Carcassonne, I learned that it is one of the most visited places in France. I was surprised to know this since I have never even heard of the place until now. I guess I should be grateful that it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site or I wouldn’t even know about this place. Carcassonne is actually best known for the citadel which is built on top of a hill. It stands above the modern town of Carcassonne which is every visitor’s entry point in visiting the citadel.
Walking Down the Streets of the Town of Carcassonne
For a place which is supposedly one of the most visited places in France, I was surprised to see that the town of Carcassonne was actually small and not that interesting. There is a major street which seems to lead to the citadel and I would imagine that it is a major shopping street. Unfortunately, it was New Year’s day, so there wasn’t much activity going on. There were still people in town but it was hard for me to tell if they were also tourists like me. I think I need to go all the way to the citadel to find out.
