Church of Saint-Agricol in Avignon

Avignon has a long history related to Christianity. After all, it used to be the seat of the papal throne when it moved from Rome to Avignon in a period which is known as the Avignon papacy. Even before the Avignon papacy, Avignon was already part of the Roman empire which converted to Christianity. As a result, it has a very vibrant church which probably made it a sensible choice as the temporary seat of the Catholic church. Avignon it seems has produced a number of saints, one of these saints is Saint Agricola or Avignon or just Saint-Agricol.

I had never heard of this saint before but it seems that this Saint Agricola was a bishop of Avignon. He was apparently the son the former bishop Saint Magnus, maybe this happened before celibacy became a thing for Catholic priests. Anyway, Saint Agricola of Avignon was known to be a caring preacher and looked after the poor. This probably contributed to him being elevated to sainthood. There is a church here in Avginon which is dedicated to him. Apparently, it houses his remains. The church was built much later in the 12th century. His remains were transferred to the church during the Avignon papacy.
