Interesting as the Pont d’Avignon may be, there is a lot of history that I don’t understand here. However it is hard to argue the beauty of the bridge itself. The Pont d’Avginon has several arches which were built across the river. The arches are reminiscent of Roman arches and it has been theorized that the bridge might have its origins from the Roman empire. The bridge has been repaired so many times that it was difficult to have very accurate dates. Parts of the bridge have been dated to the 12th century and possibly older. That is impressive considering how often the bridge had to be restored.
I turned back from the edge of the Pont d’Avignon and decided to appreciate the bridge from the river banks itself. After all, it is a bit difficult to see the bridge if you are actually on it. From the banks of the river Rhône, one can better see the beauty of the bridge. One can see how it would abruptly stop just when you think it would be reaching the other side. These days, there is another bridge which pedestrians can use to cross the river, there is a bit of walking to be done though. I’m glad that the bridge wasn’t that busy when I visited but I would like to think it was just the time of the year that made it less busy.
