The Cathedral of Our Lady of Doms in Avignon is another major monument within the medieval town. This cathedral is also Avignon’s cathedral. It stands right next to the Palais des Papes, completing an impressive ensemble of medieval structures right in the middle of town. The cathedral as the name implies is dedicated to Our Lady of Doms, a golden statue of Our Lady is mounted on top of the cathedral’s tower. It is probably the most prominent feature of the cathedral. From the outside, the cathedral didn’t seem to be that impressive, I was thinking that a cathedral built right next to the residence of the pope can’t be ordinary.
I decided to take a closer look at the cathedral. The entrance to the cathedral is actually on top of a podium which everyone needs to climb. The podium features a collection of sculptures which depict the crucifixion of Christ. Much as I wanted to see the inside of the cathedral, I couldn’t go in because the church was closed. I don’t know if it was because it was a public holiday but the gates were not open. I can only do is take photos together with the other tourists who were also outside wondering if they can get in.
