The Palais des Papes in Avignon was certainly impressive. This was the home of seven popes where the seat of Christianity was until it moved back to Rome. Much of the structure was intact but the furniture was all gone because it was looted over the centuries. Instead, we were left to imagine the interiors of the palace. What I did notice was the there didn’t seem to be a church within the palace. I thought that was strange since one would associate popes with churches, I thought it would have made sense to have them inside the palace. Turns out there wasn’t one. However, there is one outside.
As I stepped outside, I saw the church looking structure which was right beside the Palais des Papes. I noticed this church when I was taking photos from the roof of the Palais des Papes. It seems to be an old looking church and its position beside the Palais des Papes probably means that it is an important place. As it turns out, this was Avignon Cathedral. The official name of the church is Cathedral of Our Lady of Doms. What can be immediately seen is that the cathedral is a tall one. Perhaps this was made such that it matches the Palais des Papes next door.
