Interiors of the Palais des Papes

Inside a Room of the Palais des Papes

As I was walking around the Palais des Papes, I was immediately awed by the sheer size of the palace. This is probably not something uncommon when it comes to palaces for either the king or a pope. Actually, there didn’t seem to be any difference as far as I was concerned since their castles or palaces tend to look alike. This is most especially relevant to the Palais des Papes which took some cues from French castles. While much of the furnishings of the Palais des Papes are now gone, majority of the structure is still there.

Because much of the structure is still there, there is a feeling of emptiness in the palace since there is actually nothing much filling the halls. There were these odd artworks which are on exhibit at the palace but they are nothing permanent. I had to rely on the augmented reality implemented by the tablet given us at the start of the tour to better imagine how it was like back then. There are actually still traces of the former grandeur of the palace. While most of the walls in the palace are pretty bare. There would be rooms which happen to have walls in their original condition. It seems that the walls of the palace used to be very colorful. Think of it as wallpaper but it is actually painted on the walls itself. There were a handful of rooms which still have the original wall and they seem to be in delicate condition. I could only imagine how grand this place must have been when it was still in use as a palace.
