The vastness of the Palais des Papes boggles the mind. I understand that the popes of the Avignon papacy would need a proper place to work in but does he need something this large? They probably also receive guests so they would have to impress their visitors as well. As a result, the palace grew to enormous proportions. It is considered one of the large gothic structures in Europe. Unfortunately, the palace is probably all that is left of the Palais des Papes. After the pope moved the papacy back to Rome, there were some antipopes who stayed here until the pope in Rome consolidated his power.
After the consolidation, the Palais des Papes fell into disuse. During the French revolution, the palace was sacked. This resulted in a lot of the furnishings of the palace to be lost. This is such a shame since it was difficult to imagine what the halls we were visited were for. The video guide actually makes use of augmented reality to show visitors how it may have looked like back then. This time without the annoying works of art which are scattered all over the place. There are signs which describe what the place is but it still helps if you can visualize what they looked like.
