Avignon is a sizable medieval city. I made it my base these past few days since it has access to a few heritage sites, not to mention that the city itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site. A medieval city like Avignon has a nice selection of restaurants for visitors. They are mostly bunched up in the old town square which happened to be very lively that time of the year. It was winter when I visited and it was dark early. I got some rest at the hostel before heading back out to the town. I like how I paced the trip this time around.
I was looking around the town square for some places to eat but nothing really interested me. Perhaps the prices were putting me off but I think this is the same wherever I go. I don’t want to be having a sandwich for dinner so I decided to eat a bit nice tonight. There are lot of small streets one can get lost in Avignon. I was hoping that I would be able to find a nice place for dinner. I ended up finding this place call Newground Restaurant. The name itself doesn’t sound French at all but they definitely serve French cuisine. It had the appearance of a healthy food restaurant if there was such a thing. I ended up ordering the quintessential French appetizer, escargot. It wasn’t my first time having that but it wasn’t as much as I wanted. You’d think snails would be cheap. For my main course, I had steak, for some reason, French steak wasn’t as nice as the ones I had in Ireland, maybe that is why beef in Ireland it well known. Newground Restaurant wasn’t bad at all, service was good and the food was nice.
