It seems that I was right in the middle of the spectacular Roman ruins at the city of Arles. There are a lot of ruins which have been excavated or preserved here in Arles which makes it part of the UNESCO World Heritage site list. Some sites only have a single site but Arles actually has several of them. This probably makes Arles a special city when it comes to ancient Roman architecture. No small wonder that artists like Vincent Van Gogh have made their way here to paint. Arles seems to be a gift that keep giving. Not too far from the ancient theater of Arles is what is arguably the centerpiece of Arles’ Roman treasures.
There is an intact amphitheater here much like the Colosseum in Rome. I didn’t expect to see one here in France. I think I have visited similar structures in Spain but because of my ignorance of world history, I never realized that France would probably have the same structures. I might say that the one here in Arles is more impressive. The amphitheater in Arles is much larger than the ancient theater nearby. They are clearly for different purposes. One can see that the size of the amphitheater here reflects the importance of Arles to the Roman empire.
