I had no idea how important Vincent Van Gogh was to the city of Arles until I came here. He spent two years here and some of his subjects for his paintings can be found in the city. I came to Arles looking for heritage sites so this took me by surprise. I treated it as a nice bonus for visiting Arles. I found myself a nice affordable place to have lunch but it was just as fortunate since this place is another one of those places associated with Van Gogh. While I was having lunch, I noticed that there was a garden outside the back door of the Le Bigouden Creperie.
After lunch, I tried going around the block to find the entrance to this garden. There was a gate not too far from the creperie which leads right in the garden. At this point, I wasn’t really sure what this place was. All I can see was a small garden and and enclosed area. I would later find out that this actually used to be Arles main hospital. So what is in the name? Remember that Van Gogh famously cut off his left ear? This was the hospital where he was committed.
