The Place de la Republique marks the center of the city of Arles. Arles used to be a provincial capital and was thus very important. Back then, there was a Roman circus in Arles. It is no longer present but one thing which was erected in the center was an obelisk. The Obélisque d’Arles is a common feature of European plazas. This obelisk is surprisingly old having been erected in the fourth century. Over the years, the Roman circus fell into ruin and the obelisk itself collapsed until it was eventually forgotten.
Fortunately, the obelisk was rediscovered in the 17th century and the French made sure to take care of it this time. The obelisk was then rebuilt at the Place de la Republique, which seems to be a very common name for plazas in modern day France. Modern enhancements were made to the design of the obelisk depending on the era. Over the years, the designs were changed until they were finally removed. The current obelisk is largely featureless while the foundation now has a fountain. This makes a great spot for people watching in Arles since a lot of people would be coming here to relax.
