There were a lot of people standing outside Saint-Trophime Church in Arles. This was obviously one of the main sights to see in Arles since it was made part of the UNESCO World Heritage site listing of Arles. Arles used to be a very important city in the Roman empire. It was so important that one of the Emperors was crowned here at the cathedral. Not bad for a place which is not in Italy. The church had a rank of cathedral back then and it was obviously very important. I was wondering why people weren’t going in the church but it turns out that there was another entrance to the church. There is a passageway to the right of the church which will let you in.
The former cathedral was much larger than it appeared from the outside. This is probably an effect of the city being already built up and there wasn’t much space to put the church. They did make up for it in terms of the length of the church. The Romanesque church has a rather high ceiling. They were quite bare though, putting more focus on the altar in front. There are several chapels along the side of the cathedral. People can walk around the cathedral and see the various architectural details of the church. I don’t know much about the architecture of the church so I think I would just let the photos do the talking.
