I think it was finally time to get out of the Roman Theater of Orange. The stage wall or scaenae frons is one of the best preserved in all of Europe and it is around two thousand years old and it is still in remarkable condition. The stage wall stands behind the stage where performances will be held and it makes for a very impressive background. The theater itself has been restored so that performances can be held here. Think about it – performances where held in this place two thousand years ago and there still are performances regularly.
Coming to see the ancient theater was a good decision as it helped me understand Roman society better. This wasn’t just a society of warriors and conquerors. There were people who went about their lives and most importantly, know how to enjoy life. The Roman theater is just a facet of this surprisingly modern way of living. Much of the city of Orange is probably built above the old city. The presence of the ruins of Roman temple right next to the theater attests to this. There is probably a lot of more buried underneath the city but they might have been too ruined to be of use now.
