The Roman Theater of Orange wasn’t that large that one can spend hours and hours admiring the thing. I basically went through the entire audio guide and I think I have begun to appreciate the theater even more. This was a meeting place and a place for people to unwind. Most importantly, this place also marks the location of just one of the important places in the old city of Orange. As it turned out, there were other structures that were built in this area. In fact, the ruins right besides the theater were relatively recently excavated.
While I was entering the theater complex, I saw that there were exposed ruins of some old structure here at the site. I couldn’t figure out what the structure was from its shape. I mistakenly thought that it was the theater itself and I was a bit disappointed to see it in that kind of state. Fortunately, the actual theater was much better preserved. The unearthed ruins, on the other hand, are thought to be that of an ancient temple. It seemed that back then there were people who worshiped the emperor as a god. They built a temple in his honor and it must have been a sight. It is a shame that not much of the temple remains. A column here. A wall there. But there was little to tell that is was actually a temple. In the meantime, someone set up a restaurant in the fringes of the ruins.
