I think I was about done with Pont du Gard. There was an impressive aqueduct and there appears to be little else here. There seem to be walking trails here but I didn’t want to be walking around aimlessly. I tried walking to the end of the opposite bank of the Gardon but it seemed like there was no walk to get back to where I came from. I seemed to be a huge oversight on the part of the management. There appears to be two parking lots on opposites sides of the park and there didn’t seem to be an easy way to get from one to the other other than traversing the whole park again.

Along the way, I noticed that there was this significant overhang from the rocks above. This formed some kind of shelter underneath the rock and I would imagine that these would have been used a shelter back then. Documentation about this area didn’t seem to be plentiful but it seemed to be significant enough for the management to fence out the area. Salpêtrière grotto as the place is called I would imagine that this place would have been used by humans as a shelter, after all it seemed to be in a good location. There was a river nearby and the cave seemed to be high enough. There was evidence of human habitation in this location which span twenty thousand years. This was also the site of one of the first engravings of animals found in France. Truly, this place seem is a very important location. There also appears to be other caves in the vicinity of Pont du Gard but they seem to be some distance away.
