In all the wonder of looking at Pont du Gard, I almost forgot that Pont du Gard is also a bridge. There was a pedestrian bridge here are Pont du Gard and it allows visitors to cross one end to the other. There is a river here which flows under the great aqueduct – Gardon River. It is almost silly to think that the ancient Romans had to build all these aqueduct systems to ferry water from far away places when there is water nearby. True, there are probably nearer sources of water but there still needs to be some altitude in the water so that it can make use of gravity to transport the water.
The Gardon River is not a very impressive river, at least at this point. The water was very quiet and make one wonder if it is was moving at all. I have seen photos of the river with much more water so perhaps I came at a bad time when there wasn’t any recent rain. It probably would have been nice to see the river full of water together with the aqueduct. I can see some people playing in the river upstream perhaps there is more life there compared to downstream.
