It was still early in the morning in France and I am in another UNESCO World Heritage site. I was basing myself in the city of Avignon which happens to have several UNESCO World Heritage sites nearby. I think I have time to explore a few of these sites before I head back to Avignon for dinner. Fortunately, there was a bus which bring visitors near Pont du Gard. There is still some walking to be done as it doesn’t stop at the site itself. Ask the driver if you have doubts. Pont du Gard happens to be another remnant of the Roman empire when it was ruling over France. It is a fascinating piece of architecture and it amazing that it still stands.
Pont du Gard is Roman aqueduct back then there was no machinery to pump water to a city. It was either, they used underground water or they have to figure out how to get the water from a far away region to the city. The solution of the Romans was the construction of aqueducts. As the name implies, this is a pathway for water. What is amazing is how this is all very carefully designed such that the water from the far away location would be ferried to the city through the use of gravity.
