I was hoping to get some rest at the hotel. I think I have walked all over the city and I wanted to give my legs a rest. The only time I wasn’t on my feet was when I was having lunch. I was making my way to the hotel and I was just past the Rue de la Republique and wandered into one of the smaller streets. I came across this rather interesting structure. It appears to be a church and a nice one at that. There were no signs pointing to the place and I just ran into it. This is the Chapelle de l’Hôtel-Dieu.
Apparently, this was a hospital chapel. This area is actually near a former hospital complex which served the poor. The church marks where the hospital complex starts. For a hosptial chapel, the Chapelle de l’Hôtel-Dieu is actually quite large. Then again, the former hospital complex was very large as well. The site of the church dates back to the 1600s but seems to have fallen into disrepair with the removal of the charity hospital. The exterior of the chapel is baroque. Usually baroque churches are very ornate and I would have loved to see the interior but this seems to be under renovation at the time of my visit. The chapel is now a historical monument and is therefore protected.
