As far as cathedrals go, the Lyon Cathedral wasn’t that special. Sure it was old, but that could only get you so far. The cathedral is a primarily Gothic church but it isn’t as ornate as other Gothic churches I have visited. It is the seat of the church here in Lyon. I think it would be more practical to use this as the cathedral as opposed to the beautiful basilica on top of the hill. I was just making rounds in the church when I noticed that there were people in the far left of the church.
Apparently, there is an astronomical clock here. The clock has been here since the 14th century but it was reconstructed in 1661. The clock would indicate the position of the sun, moon and the stars and of course it tells the time. This is impressive since this was originally done before Copernicus and Galileo. One can have a look at the details of the clock see that this is no ordinary machine. It is a very precise piece of machinery. There are biblical figures sculpted on the clock it would display different figures depending on the day of the week. Unfortunately, the clock does not work anymore. It is scheduled for repair soon, hopefully I would get another chance to see it in action.
