One of the more significant landmarks here is Lyon can be found up near the summit of Fourvière hill. This seems to be an auspicious place to point an important place as is the case with other places in the world. At the time, the Romans were in charge of Lyon and France as a whole. This area used to be called Gaul. It probably was an impressive civilization but only a few remnants of the empire remained to the present day. There is an Odeon built on top of the hill. The Odeon of Lyon is a theater for entertainment, not unlike modern day theaters or cinemas.
The Odeon of Lyon is a remarkably well preserved amphitheater which overlooks the city of Lyon. It was probably built between the first and second century AD. It is obviously very old and it is in very good shape. Of particular note is the marble flooring of the odeon. It is made of marble which came from other places in the Mediterranean. The Romans seem to know their marble. The theater can seat three thousand spectators. It is an insight into the sophistication of Roman society. The Romans probably kept these theaters in part to keep the population busy and away from revolution. It seems it works since the Roman Gaul lasted for almost four hundred years. Perhaps they got tired of re-runs.
