Malbork Castle is the largest castle by land area. This meant that I needed to cover a lot of ground to see this place. Fortunately it wasn’t very cold that day and the exercise would help warm me up too. The castle is from the Teutonic order of German Catholic crusaders. It seems that red brick is the material of choice here in Malbork. I remember that the fortifications of Warsaw Old Town was also made of brick. It has a very nice look to it and with proper lighting, it would really stand out. I was lucky that I was there during a public holiday, that way I practically had the castle all to myself.
I was at one of the access points of the castle. This one seems to be near the closed ticket booth. There were wall surrounding the castle and the were also made of brick. I didn’t see any moat but I could imagine that they would have had one back then. This naturally help defend the castle. Indeed it was the subject of numerous attacks. The castle was expanded over the years to its current size which is describe to be the large Gothic castle in the Europe.
