It was nice to see the place where Karol Wojtyła, also known as Pope John Paul II, grew up in. Perhaps people would be interested in how someone becomes a pope. Or perhaps how someone becomes a saint. The humble beginnings of both can be seen here. This is better since it is actually in a more modern setting compared to the saints of old. This makes it easier for people to relate to. No one lives in the old apartment anymore, as it has been turned into a museum for people to appreciate.
What struck me the most about this visit to Pope John Paul II’s family home was that it wasn’t remarkable at all. Other than it was actually beside a church, there wasn’t anything special about it. Perhaps that is the message here. One does not have to be special to be a saint or a pope. Each one of us strive towards that and if we do, perhaps this world would be a better place. If a young kid from Wadowice who loves the cream cake from across the street can became a pope and later a saint? Perhaps we can be better people too just by being nicer to each other and we don’t really need a fancy house to do that.
