After the security checkpoint at the Auschwitz, visitors will reach an open square where a grassy field now sits. It belies the horrors which happened in this place. If one didn’t know any better, one would not think much of this place. Beyond the grass is the main entrance to the concentration camp. There is a gate where the words Arbeit macht frei – work sets you free – are prominently displayed. This is all a lie since it gives the prisoners hope that by working, they will eventually be released. History tells us this was not so. Immediately, after entering the gate, visitors will see rows of structures which are the dwelling places of the prisoners. The structures are two to three stories high. They have windows but it is not escapable.
I was shocked as to how many bunkers they had here. Each one would be able to house several hundred prisoners. One could almost imagine this place to be a like a modern residential estate. There is a wide road outside the bunkers. Apparently, the prisoners were all gathered here everyday and counted to make sure there are no escapees. If there is someone missing someone else gets hurt or worse. This is how the German soldiers controlled the people who vastly outnumber them. By creating this air of fear, it is possible to manage this place without too many problems.
