I was finally in the village of Owczary which happened to be host to a UNESCO World Heritage site. This one, in particular, is the Protection of Our Most Holy Lady Church. This church or more accurately, tserkva, is one used by the Greek Orthodox faith. I am not very familiar with this branch of the Catholic Church but it seems be one which has old roots and it seems to be one to stick to them. The tserkvas typically have towers which have onion like domes. The ones in this tserkva weren’t that large but I have seen photos of domes which can be quite large.
I came to know that this tserkvas isn’t exclusive to the Greek Orthodox church but the Roman Catholic Church also uses this as a place of worship. This is probably the first time I have heard of two different faiths using the same place as a place of worship. Perhaps it is because the Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic faiths don’t differ that much that they can share the same location. There will still be separate services for either faith. It seems that although Poland is overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, there are still populations which adhere to Greek Catholicism, and enough of them to justify a service.
