The magic of GPS has enabled me to travel to parts unknown here in Poland. I am on a tour of southern Poland where there are scattered sites under the UNESCO world heritage site listing Wooden Churches of Southern Lesser Poland. So far I have enjoyed my whirlwind tour of the country and I’m looking forward to more places. It is probably amazing to know that southern Poland not just has the wooden churches as their world heritage site but they also another set of structures which are under another UNESCO world heritage site listing.
Southern Poland seems to be rich melting pot of cultures that there are two different wooden church listings – one for each major religion. The Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region in Poland and Ukraine is another major listing here in this region. I had no idea I was already in the Carpathian region. I only heard about that place in books and it was surprising to know that I was already there. The Wooden Tserkvas are churches as well but they are associated with the Orthodox or Greek Orthodox church. The architecture is distinct enough to warrant a separate listing.
