I think I should have already expected this. The Church of the Assumption of Holy Mary and Saint Michael the Archangel was dark inside. This is probably typical of gothic churches, though this is the first wooden gothic church which I have visited. I probably wouldn’t have considered this church a gothic church but it does have most of the marks of a gothic church patricularly a high roof. The roof is quite high with a few windows to let some light in. The altar area is much brighter than the rest of the church. This probably makes sense since you would want the focus to be on the altar.
The church just oozes with age which is unsurprising since this is considered the oldest wooden gothic church in Europe, possibly the world. The church was probably built in the late 1300s. One would think that wood can’t possibly last that long. It is probably true since the exterior, the most vulnerable part of the church, was replaced with new wood. This gave it the appearance of being bright and cheery, at lest from the photos. It was almost 20 years since they last replaced it and the wood has already aged. It is good to know they go regular maintenance on the structure.
