It was amazing to see Saint Kinga’s Chapel deep underground in the Wieliczka Salt Mine. There was a large chamber which cleared of rock salt and they decided to set up a chapel there. The chapel is actually a bit of a misnomer here since it implies that it is small. The chamber here is actually quite large and and easily fit a church. There were religious figures carved in the walls of the chapel. Descending down the stairs is an experience since the staircase is als carved out of rock salt. I wonder how it managed to not erode from the constant trampling of tourist feet.
There was a surprising amount of detail put into the building of the chapel, even the floor has the appearance of being tiled. The chandeliers do a good job of brightening up the chapel, it is really hard to believe that it is made of salt crystal. This is probably the highlight of a visit to the salt mine. I was really glad I came to visit this place despite the cold outside. We were free to roam about the chapel to see any interesting bits they have here. I’m sure we won’t run of out things to see here.
