The Wieliczka Salt Mine continues to impress me. I thought this was going to be a boring walk through the mine but it is actually very interesting. I like how they set up the trail so that you can see a lot of things along the way. The tourist trail is less than two percent of the total tunnel length of the mine. So it would be difficult to imagine just how vast the tunnel network is. It is equally impressive to have build such a tunnel network without collapsing the tunnels. It seems that they have mastered the art of tunneling.
The way through the tourist trail is filled with interesting stuff. Among them are sculptures which are made of rock salt. I think I have seen lamps made from salt crystals but this is probably the first time I have seen a full blown sculpture made from salt. Earlier we saw a depiction of the discovery of the ring of Saint Kinga which is a legend associated with this mine. There were other interesting sculptures here of a stern looking King Casimir. A few of the sculptures here are religious themed, which is not surprising given the devotion of the Polish people to the Catholic faith.
