I was mildly impressed with the Wieliczka Salt Mine. I came here having very low expectations about the place but it seems that there is much more than meets the eye. There were several sculptures made of rock salt, a material which I never would have imagined to use for sculpting. The rock is already there it probably just happens that there is salt mixed in the rock. It is was hard to imagine how much salt this place has. It seems that the very walls, the floor and the ceiling are all made of salt. This is a far cry from the table salt we are used to.
The salt mine was set up properly for tourism. There were numerous exhibits here to help visitors understand how life was back when the mine was still in active use. As you would imagine there weren’t a lot of machines back then. A lot of the work was done by humans or animals. It was very dark as well, with torches as the only source of light. One thing I didn’t know what that there can be dangerous gases here some of which can be flammable. The gases are burned off in explosive events with the mines hidden away. Of course someone still need to trigger the explosion but they would have taken precautions to prevent casualties.
