I was actually surprised to see how many people were visiting the Wieliczka Salt Mine. I thought that the salt mine seemed to be a boring place but since it was a world heritage site, I decided to take a look at this place. When purchasing tickets, you are asked if you want to take photos inside the most popular room, I thought this was a strange thing to ask. Apparently, you can save money if you don’t need to. I believe phone cameras are okay but larger cameras like mine need extra payment. I don’t understand the logic but I just want to get my photos.
Visitors were herded into the mine in groups. We were each assigned a guide who will bring us down to the mine. There was a very long flight of stairs which lead all the way down the mine. I was surprised to see how deep it was. It would be surprising that anyone actually discovered rock salt here in the first place if it was that deep. It seems everyone was able to manage walking down the mine, I hope we don’t need to climb up the stairs to get back to the surface. I guess this is the deepest I have been below the surface. We were lead to another waiting area where we were given an orientation of do’s and dont’s in the salt mine. I just need to remember you should not eat more than a kilo of salt, at least, that is what I was told.
